What to take to Hospital When Having Your Baby

Generally the hospital that you book into will give you a list of what you will need to take to hospital when it is time for your baby's arrival.  It is recommended that you pack up to 4-6 weeks before your baby is due just in case your baby decides that early is the way to go.

Essential items for the birth include:

• your birth plan;
• music/cds;
• massage oil;
• something to wear during labour - breastfeeding tops are a good solution here;
• snacks and drinks;
• hair tie;
• lip balm;
• book/magazine;
• toiletries;
• TENS machine if this is going to part of your pain relief plan.
• camera/batteries;

After the birth:

• nursing bras/breastfeeding tops;
• maternity pads;
• breast pads;
• clothes - remember that you will still need your maternity clothes as it is most likely that you will not be able to fit into your normal clothes yet;
• outfits for baby;
• baby blankets/wraps;
• phone book with phone numbers.

Going home:

• don't forget your baby car seat which should be fitted by an authorised person and meet the Australian standard requirements;
• blanket for the trip home;
• outfit for the trip home.
