Lactation occurs quite early in pregnancy so most breast changes will have occurred by around the 4th month making this a good time to be fitted for your maternity bra.
As the breast is constantly changing shape it is recommended that during pregnancy and lactation that an underwire bra be avoided as a rigid underwire may put pressure on the breast when it is fuller. Such pressure can also lead to blocked milk ducts or mastitis.
There is actually no difference between a nursing bra and a maternity bra as the name means the same thing.
Wearing a maternity bra to bed gives breast tissue the extra support it needs to help prevent breast sag. It may also help with breast soreness and may make it easier to feed.
A good idea is to have 2 or 3 maternity bras. As your breasts may leak milk they can need changing more frequently than usual. It also allows you to wear one, have one ready to wear while one is the wash.
